About Southcode Engineering
Southcode Engineering is a UK engineering consultancy focused on complex systems and real-time coordination problems. We work where software, hardware, and operations meet, helping organisations make difficult systems reliable, understandable, and deployable.
Our background spans defence, transport, and critical infrastructure, where systems must operate under uncertainty and cannot rely on ideal conditions. That experience shapes how we approach engineering today: favouring clear system behaviour, open standards, and solutions that can be operated and trusted in the real world.
We are now applying the same practical approach across both public and private sectors, supporting aerospace, rail, and emerging infrastructure technologies. Our work centres on turning complex ideas into systems that can actually run, be observed, and be maintained over time.

Where we can help

Rapid Engineering & Prototyping
Turning early concepts into working hardware and software quickly, allowing ideas to be tested under real conditions rather than remaining theoretical.

Technical Guidance for Complex Systems
Hands-on advisory support for organisations dealing with difficult integration, operational technology, or emerging technical risk. Grounded in engineering delivery rather than reports.

Systems Integration & Interoperability
Connecting legacy and modern systems so data, decisions, and operators stay aligned. Experience working with open and defence-aligned standards including CoT, MAVLink, StratML, and related frameworks.
Our Work
These projects show the kinds of problems we tend to work on. Different domains, same goal: turning complex ideas into systems that can actually operate in the real world.
AMP (Advanced Mission Planner)
AMP is an engineering platform we are developing to explore how complex operations can be planned and monitored more transparently. It focuses on a recurring problem we have seen across defence, infrastructure, and emergency response systems: plans exist, data exists, but the reasoning between intent and execution is often unclear.
Rather than adding another situational awareness layer, AMP experiments with making objectives, decisions, and system state explicitly connected and observable in real time. The aim is to help operators understand not just what is happening, but why a system is behaving the way it is.
The platform combines formal planning structures with live state estimation, allowing plans to adapt while remaining explainable to human operators. Much of the work draws on standards and operational practices already familiar within defence and critical infrastructure environments.
AMP remains an active development programme and forms the foundation for several of our ongoing research and integration projects.
BitPowerNode (BPN-1)
BitPowerNode is an ongoing engineering project exploring how small amounts of wasted mechanical energy in infrastructure can be recovered and used to power embedded sensing systems.
The concept focuses on environments such as roads, rail corridors, bridges, and industrial surfaces, where vibration and structural stress continuously dissipate energy. Rather than attempting large-scale generation, the goal is pragmatic: recover a small fraction of that existing energy and use it locally.
Energy is conditioned, stored, and applied to low-power sensing and communications, reducing dependence on grid connections, routine battery replacement, or solar availability. The approach is aimed at enabling long-lived infrastructure monitoring in locations where maintenance access is difficult or costly.
The project is currently at design and research stage as we explore practical deployment models and partnerships for future prototyping.
Applied AI Systems
Our AI work grew from the same problem that led to AMP: systems operating in complex environments need reasoning they can trust, not just predictions. We design and deploy AI systems that run securely, explain their behaviour, and operate reliably outside ideal cloud conditions.
Rather than relying on a single model, we build federated AI architectures that select and combine models based on operational constraints such as security, latency, and connectivity. These systems are typically deployed alongside real-world sensing and decision workflows, not as standalone tools.
“We bridge the gap between cloud-scale intelligence and the tactical edge.”
Core Capabilities & Extensions
Secure retrieval-augmented AI using private datasets, allowing decision support without exposing sensitive data.
Custom model development and fine-tuning for specialised prediction, analysis, and post-operation review.
Local and air-gapped deployment, enabling AI reasoning in environments where cloud access is limited or unavailable.
Integrated language, vision, and audio processing to support coordination between distributed teams and autonomous systems.
Applied Computer Vision & Perception
Many modern systems rely on visual data, yet computer vision often performs well in demonstrations and poorly in operational environments. Lighting changes, motion, compression, weather, and bandwidth constraints quickly expose the limits of laboratory-trained models.
Our work focuses on making vision systems usable under real conditions. Rather than treating detection as an isolated AI task, we integrate perception directly into operational workflows, combining vision models with contextual data, edge processing, and human oversight where required.
Typical work includes visual detection and tracking, infrastructure and terrain analysis, autonomous system perception, and sensor fusion where imagery must align with telemetry or planning systems.
Why work with Southcode
Practical engineering for difficult systems.
Engineering first
You work directly with the engineers designing and building the system. We focus on understanding the real problem before proposing solutions, and we favour practical progress over lengthy process.
Clarity over complexity
Our work centres on making systems understandable and observable. We avoid opaque automation and prioritise approaches that operators and stakeholders can trust and explain.
Built for real environments
Much of our experience comes from systems that must operate under imperfect conditions. We design with failure modes, integration challenges, and long-term operation in mind, not ideal laboratory assumptions.
